Igniting Culture Change that Impacts the Health of Staff and Students

In collaboration with Live Well Omaha: Douglas County Putting Prevention to Work, school principal Eric Nelson embraces every opportunity to help facilitate a culture shift for students and staff at Fontenelle Elementary School. As a Partners for a Healthy City — and the first school to sign up — Nelson has made a commitment to bring healthy opportunities to the Fontenelle community.

Some of the latest healthy school initiatives at Fontenelle Elementary include: a before-school walking club, through the School Wellness Network, encourages physical activity for students, staff and parents; new healthy opportunities, such as water friendly options for students and staff; a dedicated space for lactating moms ensuring staff can make nutrition a priority for even the smallest members of the community; healthy “Grab & Go” breakfast is available for all students so they can get breakfast on their way to their classroom; a school garden that helps kids understand where healthy foods come from and gives them a chance to participate in its growth; and a new Boltage program, where kids can sign up to track their own physical activity when they walk or ride a bike to school each day.
