Schools: Physical Activity

Promote active play and learning through movement.

Children naturally enjoy active play and learn through movement. According to an article by PBS Teachers, in addition to the health benefits of physical activity, movement is an integral part of the young child’s life and education, for it is through movement that children develop social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Encourage educators to promote movement in the classroom to engage their students in more physical activity than their daily dose of recess.

Here are some ways you can add physical activity to your school day:

  • Provide recess everyday
  • Provide classroom physical activity breaks for children everyday
  • Provide a physical activity club such as a walking group
  • Integrate a physical activity component within, before and/or after school curriculum
